2026 Is the Year Wire-Free Won

Two years ago, buying a robotic mower meant burying hundreds of metres of perimeter wire around your lawn. In 2026, almost every model worth recommending uses RTK-GPS, computer vision, or some combination of both — and the difference is enormous. Setup is now an afternoon, not a weekend.

We tested seven mowers across three Australian properties ranging from 400 m² to 2,000 m². Slopes, garden beds, narrow side passages and unfenced edges all featured in the test conditions.

Best Overall: Mammotion Luba 2 AWD 5000

The Mammotion Luba 2 AWD 5000 is the most capable consumer robot mower we have used. All-wheel drive lets it tackle 45-degree slopes that brought every other test unit to a stop, the RTK-GPS held centimetre-accuracy even under tree cover, and the LiDAR-assisted obstacle avoidance reliably steered around irrigation heads and garden ornaments.

Best for: Larger lawns, sloped terrain, and lawns with complex layouts.

Best Value: Worx Landroid Vision L1600

Worx took a different approach with vision-only navigation — no perimeter wires AND no GPS reference station. Setup of the Worx Landroid Vision L1600 is the simplest of any mower we tested: walk the perimeter holding a phone. Performance on flat to mildly sloped lawns under 1,600 m² is excellent.

Best for: Suburban lawns and homeowners who want minimum hassle.

Best for Large Properties: Husqvarna Automower 450X

For acreage owners, the Husqvarna Automower 450X remains the workhorse. It covers up to 5,000 m², handles wet grass better than any competitor, and Husqvarna’s service network in regional Australia is unmatched.

Best for: Rural properties, larger residential blocks.

Best for Small Lawns: Gardena SILENO City 600

Designed for lawns under 600 m², the Gardena SILENO City 600 is fast, quiet and inexpensive. It does not have the slope capability or all-wheel drive of the Luba 2, but for a flat suburban backyard it is genuinely all you need.

Best for: Compact urban lawns and townhouse gardens.

Best Premium Cut Quality: Honda Miimo HRM 3000

If you care about a true bowling-green finish, the Honda Miimo HRM 3000 brings Honda’s decades of mower engineering to the robotic category. The result is a noticeably cleaner cut at the cost of slightly slower mowing speed.

Best for: Lawn enthusiasts and homeowners with show lawns.

Setup Tips We Wish We Knew

  • Place RTK base stations as high as possible with clear sky view — losing satellite signal causes most “robot mower won’t map” complaints.
  • Mow your lawn manually once before first mapping run. Tall grass interferes with vision-based perimeter detection.
  • Set narrow no-go zones around irrigation heads. Robot mowers tend to drift closer over time.
  • Charge to 100% the first time, even if it takes overnight. Battery learning algorithms get more accurate from a full first cycle.

The Verdict

Wire-free robot mowers crossed the line from “promising” to “actually good” in 2026. Unless you have a complex lawn with lots of narrow corridors, you will get genuinely autonomous mowing for two to three thousand dollars. That price point will keep falling — but waiting another year means another year of weekend mowing, which has its own cost.
