Why 2026 Is Different
For years, cordless robotic pool cleaners were a compromise — shorter runtimes, weaker suction, awkward retrieval. This generation has closed almost all of those gaps. Battery densities, brushless motors and saltwater-resistant electronics have all matured at once, and the result is a cleaner, lighter, easier-to-store class of pool robot.
We tested every major model in pools ranging from 6 m × 3 m above-ground plunge pools through to 14 m lap pools with vinyl, fibreglass and pebble interiors. Algae bloom recovery, leaf load and waterline scum were all part of the testing.
Best Overall: Beatbot AquaSense X
The Beatbot AquaSense X is the first cordless pool robot that genuinely matches plug-in performance. Five separate motors handle floor, walls, waterline and surface skimming simultaneously, and the surface skim mode alone is worth the price for anyone with overhanging trees.
Best for: Larger pools, treelined backyards, owners who hate dealing with cables.
Best Value: Aiper Surfer S1
The Aiper Surfer S1 brings flagship features — wall climbing, waterline scrubbing, app control — to a meaningful sub-$1,000 price point. Battery life of 3+ hours per charge covers most residential pools twice over.
Best for: Mid-sized residential pools, first-time buyers.
Best Premium Tethered: Dolphin Premier
If you are happy to deal with a cord, the Dolphin Premier remains the cleaning gold standard. Two cartridge slots let you switch between fine and coarse filtration mid-cycle, and the weekly schedule mode is the most reliable we tested.
Best for: Plaster and pebble interiors, heavy leaf load, anyone who values cleaning quality over convenience.
Best for Above-Ground Pools: Aiper Seagull Pro
Most premium robots are over-specified for above-ground pools. The Aiper Seagull Pro is purpose-built for them — light enough to retrieve one-handed, dock-free charging, and a 90-minute cycle that handles a 6 m round pool with room to spare.
Best for Saltwater Pools: Polaris Freedom Plus
Saltwater is brutal on electronics. The Polaris Freedom Plus uses fully sealed brushless motors and titanium-grade fasteners, and Polaris’s saltwater warranty is the longest in the industry.
What We Stopped Recommending
Suction-side and pressure-side cleaners — the kind that plug into your pool’s skimmer or dedicated cleaner line — are increasingly hard to recommend. They rely on your pool pump running while they work, which is expensive in electricity terms, and they generally underperform even budget robotic models.
Buying Advice for 2026
Battery is the big variable. Look for models with user-replaceable batteries — Aiper and Beatbot both now offer this, while most competitors do not. A robot that lasts two summers because the battery cannot be swapped is not a good investment, however good the cleaning performance.
