The Root AI Virgo (now part of AppHarvest) is a robotic harvesting system designed for greenhouse tomato production. Its soft robotic gripper uses AI vision to assess tomato ripeness by analyzing color, size, and surface characteristics, then gently picks only fully ripe fruit while leaving unripe tomatoes for later harvest passes.
Operating autonomously along greenhouse rails, the Virgo works continuously in the controlled environment, picking tomatoes around the clock without the fatigue or inconsistency of human harvesters. Its gentle touch results in lower damage rates than hand picking, extending shelf life and reducing waste for greenhouse operators.
